Integrating Haptic VR and Dexter™

Combining precise digital interaction with force feedback, Haptic VR for Dexter™ bridges the gap between virtual and physical operation, empowering operators to train, plan, and execute complex tasks with confidence
Haptic VR Demonstrated at WNE 2025

Veolia's nuclear solutions business is leading the next generation of remote handling technology by collaborating with TOIA to integrate Haptic Virtual Reality (VR) into Veolia’s Dexter™ telemanipulator system.

Haptic VR simulation perspective

Digital simulation can replicate real-world operations, improving safety, efficiency and skills

Haptic VR for Dexter™ makes the digital tangible

Experience hyper-realistic training and operation of Dexter™ through haptic virtual reality. Our bespoke interface connects the telemanipulator to TOIA’s Haptic VR Environment, powered by Unreal Engine, letting operators experience every interaction before executing tasks in hazardous environments.

What makes Haptic VR so realistic?

  • Digital-twin technology models Dexter™'s kinematics, dynamics, and force behavior with control-grade precision
  • Haptic interface calibrated directly against the physical system for accurate movements, forces, and resistances
  • Unreal Engine renders the immersive 3D environment and handles visual interaction
  • Real-time simulation calculates physical contact forces and motion constraints with ultra-low-latency feedback
  • Operators feel weight, resistance, and grip exactly as Dexter™ responds in the field
  • Skills transfer reliably to live nuclear operations

Enhancing Operations Through Realistic Training and Assessment

1
Accelerate Operator Readiness

Practice complex tasks risk-free. Master rare scenarios. Build transferable skills across remote handling tools. Reduce reliance on physical system availability.

2

Optimise Task Planning & Design

Validate feasibility before execution. Iterate designs rapidly without mockups. Test edge cases and decommissioning approaches. Streamline operations and reduce expenses.

3

Enhance Safety & Efficiency

Identify and mitigate risks early. Improve decision-making through realistic rehearsal. Support feasibility studies across the nuclear sector.

What is Dexter™?

Dexter™ is a force feedback telemanipulator system that replicates the flexible motor function and touch sensitivity of a human arm in remote environments where humans can't go. Operators can control a remote robotic arm from up to 8km away. Capable of handling tasks from manipulating 10-100kg objects to precise pipette work, it makes complex remote operations simpler and safer in hazardous environments.
