A course designed to teach all the fundamentals of alpha spectrometry, from charged-particle matter interactions through to the interpretation of spectra, including energy and yield calibration. Essential training for mastering methods of identifying and quantifying radionuclides using alpha spectrometry, and for effectively using the Visu Alpha software to analyse and process your own spectra.

Price: €1520 excl. VAT per trainee

Location: At Veolia | Nuclear Solutions offices in Aix-en-Provence or at your premises (for a course with at least 6 participants)

Duration: 2 day (14 hours)

Prerequisites

  • Reading, writing, understanding and speaking French
  • Module 1 or equivalent (understanding physical quantities such as activity, dose and the associated units)
  • Mathematical knowledge at A-level standard (logarithms, exponentials, solving equations with one unknown)

 

Who is this course aimed at?

Any staff who may be required to carry out gamma spectrometry measurements or interpret gamma spectra. This includes operators, technicians and engineers.

  • A refresher on radioactivity: decay schemes and the table of radioactive elements, the principles of how charged particles interact with matter, the various types of measuring instruments, and an introduction to the concept of efficiency.
  • Principles of alpha spectrum deconvolution using Visu Alpha software: analysis of a
    spectrum, principles of alpha spectrometry software.
  • Using Visu Alpha software for energy calibration and efficiency calibration.
  • Defining a tracer and calculating chemical yield.
  • Processing of various pre-recorded spectra.
