Summary

A course designed to teach all the fundamentals of passive neutron measurement, from neutron-matter interactions through to the implementation of a counting chain, covering detection technologies and counting methods. Essential training for understanding how gas detectors work, mastering total and coincidence counting methods, and being able to design and calibrate your own passive neutron measurement cell.

Practical Information & Prequisites

Price: €3975 excl. VAT per trainee

Location: At Veolia | Nuclear Solutions offices in Aix-en-Provence

Duration: 5 days (35 hours)

Prerequisites

  • Reading, writing, understanding and speaking French
  • Module 1 or equivalent (understanding physical quantities such as activity, dose and the associated units)
  • Mathematical knowledge at A-level standard (logarithms, exponentials, solving equations with one unknown)

Who is this course aimed at?

Any staff who may be involved in the design of passive neutron measurement cells or in carrying out
neutron counting measurements. Operators, technicians and nuclear measurement engineers.

Learning objectives

  • Understand all neutron-matter interactions in order to comprehend neutron detection.
  • Identify and define the functions of all the modules that make up the
    passive neutron cell.
  • Apply the total counting method in passive neutron measurement.
  • Apply the coincidence counting method in passive neutron measurement.
  • Adjust the main electronic parameters of the neutron counting chain.

Teaching methods and tools

  • Course materials and discussions with the trainer.
  • Tutorials and practical sessions.

Assessment criteria

Tutorials, practical sessions and a multiple-choice assessment at the end of the course.

Detailed content

  • Neutron physics, neutron-matter interactions, moderation, and key reactions associated with detection.
  • Gas detector technologies: operating regions, ionisation chambers and proportional counters, advantages and disadvantages of 3He and BF3 detectors, sensitivities, wall effects.
  • Passive neutron measurements: total and coincidence counting, associated calculations, performance and limitations.
  • Implementation of a measured cell: specifying, designing and organising the testing of a measuring station.
  • Practical work: connecting the neutron measurement chain, setting the high
operating voltage, setting the discrimination threshold, and performing passive neutron counting measurements.

Les travaux pratiques mettent en oeuvre des sources de rayonnements ionisants. Pour plus d'information se référer aux recommandations mentionnées dans les CGV ou par mail à [email protected].
